The annual offering for Virginia missions honors Alma Hunt (1909–2008), a native Virginian and global missions leader known for her unwavering commitment to Christ and passionate advocacy for worldwide ministry. Since 1976, this offering has been a joint ministry of HerMission (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). It provides essential funding for HerMission initiatives, BGAV special ministries, community outreach projects, and mission efforts not supported through regular church giving. The offering’s annual goal and fund distribution are prayerfully determined by the HerMission Executive Director/Treasurer and the BGAV Executive Director, and approved by their respective boards.

Who Is Alma Hunt?
“Alma Hunt (“Miss Alma” to most) served as executive director of Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) at the national level, from 1948-1974. Originally from Roanoke, she completed degrees at Longwood and Columbia (NY), before moving into her new position with WMU.”
“During Miss Alma’s long term of service promoting mission endeavors, she inspired women and girls all over the world to lead, pray, and love people as God loves them, through her infectious compassion and care for others—serving in over 90 countries! Later, she was instrumental in forming the women’s department of the Baptist World Alliance at the global level and was active in the Virginia Baptist Historical Society [VBHS] and the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty [BJC].”
