Overview
The Minister of Music Search Committee received 92 responses to our congregational survey, along with input from key stakeholder interviews, including choir members, parents, youth, ministerial staff, and music ministry leaders. We are deeply grateful for the thoughtful participation and the wealth of insights shared by our church family. This summary presents the key themes and findings that are informing our search for a new Minister of Music.
Overwhelming Appreciation for Our Music Ministry
The survey results and stakeholder conversations reveal extraordinary satisfaction with our current music program. Respondents rated the importance of music to our church at an average of 9.6 out of 10, with 91% giving ratings of 9 or 10. Our ministerial staff described music’s importance as “9.99” and emphasized that “we have a niche and we do it well.”
This sentiment was echoed throughout stakeholder interviews, with consistent praise for the quality, consistency, and excellence that define our music ministry. Many respondents shared moving accounts of musical “high points,” frequently mentioning our Chancel Choir’s performances of Handel’s Messiah, the beauty of our concert series, and the powerful role of music in worship services throughout the liturgical year.
Strong Foundation with Thoughtful Enhancement Opportunities
Commitment to Excellence: Survey responses and stakeholder interviews revealed overwhelming appreciation for our current musical standards. As one long-term member noted, there has been remarkable “consistency in the quality of music presented at RRCB.” Our RRCB Music Committee emphasized the importance of maintaining our established traditions, particularly our liturgical focus and signature performances like Messiah at Christmas and the Hallelujah Chorus on Easter.
Preference for Incremental Growth: Stakeholders consistently expressed a desire for incremental rather than dramatic change. While 71% of survey respondents offered constructive suggestions for enhancement, these were framed as building upon our strong foundation rather than replacing current practices. The prevailing sentiment supports thoughtful evolution while preserving what makes our music ministry distinctive.
No Changes Desired: It’s important to note that 29% of survey respondents indicated satisfaction with our music ministry as it currently exists, expressing no desire for changes. This significant portion of our congregation values continuity and the preservation of our established traditions.
