Charles Bagwell is Arnold Salzburg Professor and chief of pediatric surgery at MCV/VCU, where he has taught medical students and surgical residents for almost 25 years. For the past several years he has been attending night classes at BTSR to develop skills and expertise in the area of pastoral counseling and is leading a program at MCV in wellness and support for medical personnel. Needless to say, the subject of pain and suffering – and that of healing and recovery – is of great interest. Dr. Bagwell is the husband of Louise (former head and founder of the Millwood School), a father of five, and a grandfather to two-year-old grandson James, who has taught him the truth of Barbara Brown Taylor’s words, that “one can learn more theology from holding a sleeping child than from many hours of study on the subject.”
