Adult Wednesday Night Program
Wednesday, February 24, 2016
6:30 p.m., Choir Room
Lent is one of the most ancient observances of the Christian church. It occurs during the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, and spans some 40 weekdays in addition to the six Sundays of Lent. The name is derived from the German and old English words for “length,” referring to the springtime lengthening of daylight.
Lent is a time for Christians to prepare themselves personally for the proper observance of the passion of Christ during Holy Week, the crucifixion, and Easter. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.
RRCB adult Wednesday night programs during the Lenten season this year will use this time of fasting to reflect back to our roots – our relationship to God, our spirituality, and our faith journeys. Join us as we “re-fill” our fasting spaces with spiritual practices in order to grow closer to God. We will explore the roots of Christian Spirituality (Marcus Borg’s The Heart of Christianity will guide us), as well as studying and practicing various Christian spiritual disciplines to help us grow closer to and hear God (e.g., silence, meditation, spiritual imagination, lectio divina, contemplative/centering prayer, and others).
