SUMMARY:St. Cuthbert’s Way Pilgrim Walk
DESCRIPTION:Potential Dates: April 27-May 6\, 2027\nSign Up Here \nRiver Road Church Board of Christian Education & Spiritual Formation is offering an opportunity for those who wish to participate in a pilgrim walk in 2027\, similar yet different than the Camino Inglés walked by others in 2025. We will be partnering with Rev. Anna Miller through her new LLC\, Wild Compass Creatives. She will serve as host to the group and provide the necessary walk information\, preparation details\, presence on the trail\, and materials for spiritual reflection. \nAbout the Walk\nSt. Cuthbert’s Way is a 62-mile long-distance trail that is a well-marked\, easy-to-moderate walk through the border regions between Scotland and England. Weaving through varied landscapes of woods\, hills\, moorlands\, and along the coast\, this route follows the footsteps of St. Cuthbert\, from Melrose Abbey where he began his religious journey in 650AD\, and travels to his final resting place on Holy Island\, also known as Lindisfarne. There are historical sites along the way such as medieval abbeys\, castles\, battlefields\, villages\, and ancient market towns. The walk finishes with a walk across the tidal sands to Lindisfarne\, one of England’s most famous early Christian sites. \nSt. Cuthbert\, in his younger years was a shepherd who entered the Northumbrian monastery of Melrose in 651AD. After successfully overcoming the plague\, he succeeded the prior there\, who succumbed to the illness. He assisted plague victims\, served the people across the countryside\, and evangelized the Northumbrian region. He protected birds\, was known as a miracle worker\, and by nature was a hermit\, which led him to a life devoted to prayer following his 676AD retirement. \nFollowing his burial on the Holy Island\, his body was removed in 875 to protect it from Viking raids\, being carried throughout northeastern England and finally placed at Durham Cathedral. It was a pilgrim site until it was destroyed by King Henry VII in 1538. A small chapel that was built in the 14th century now stands on the site of his final hermitage. \nThere are prayers and writings of the Northumbrian community that are able to serve as guides for reflection on this meaningful journey\, of which several will be made available to those who participate. \nInformation Meeting — July\, 29\, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom\nAn Information Meeting will be held on Zoom on Wednesday\, July 29\, at 6:00PM. If you need to discuss it individually\, please reach out to Rev. Anna Miller to schedule a separate meeting. You will be sent a Zoom link when you fill out the Sign Up Form. \nCost for the Walk\nThese are approximate figures which will be adjusted when formal the reservation is made with local entities and based on exchange rate from U.S. dollar to euro. \n\n$1845/person – double room (double bed or 2 twins)\n$2485/person – single room (includes single supplement cost)\n\nWe do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone who wishes to go on this Pilgrimage.
